Howard Hook
CPA, CFP, EKS Associates
Ask The Biz Brain (AM)

Howard Hook knows the relationship between investments, taxes, and what a client really needs and wants is the most important part of any engagement. That’s why comprehensive fee-only financial planning that requires strategic thinking, creative solutions, and client education is Howard at his best, and his clients can attest to his passion for it.
“People come to me with big questions - ‘Can I retire?’ or ‘I’m getting divorced, what does that mean for me financially?’ or ‘My spouse died and I didn’t handle the finances, what do I do?’ The only way to help is to address these issues from all angles – investments won’t do it alone; tax planning won’t do it alone. It all needs to be incorporated into a plan that has a proven process behind it. It also has to be something the client understands and trusts,” says Howard.
What all of Howard’s clients have in common, regardless of their profession or marital status, is an appreciation for his planning style, methods and track record. He believes in and enjoys spending time with clients and learning about their situation and life goals. Only then does he implement a proven process and years of expertise to develop an appropriate plan, and explain it in a way that clients understand.
Howard’s ability to make sense of some of life’s most challenging financial situations has attracted positive attention in the region and the country. He was named one of Medical Economics magazine’s “Best Advisors for Doctors” in 2011 and 2010, and has been featured on local business television, including News 12 New Jersey’s It’s Your Money. Howard is also a regularly published author, appearing in such publications as Accounting Today, Money magazine, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, Practical Tax Strategies, Investment News, TimeMagazine.com, WebCPA.com, and CNN.com. Locally, Howard can frequently be found answering questions in two of The Star-Ledger’s business columns, “Ask the Biz Brain” and “Get with the Plan,” as well as NJBIZ and Times of Trenton. He also provides tips and education in his monthly column, “Hook’d On Personal Finance,” appearing in the Princeton Packet in the last week of every month.
As a speaker, Howard has participated in panel discussions locally and at national summits, has taught candidates studying for the Certified Financial Planning (CFP®) exam in the course area of taxation, and currently teaches numerous financial courses at Princeton Adult School, area universities, and not-for-profit organizations.
Personally, Howard is very committed to giving back to his community. He is serving a two-year term as Treasury Secretary of Shomrei Torah Temple in Wayne, N.J. and also sits on the executive committee. Howard also participates in events such as the Financial Planning Association’s “Philadelphia Financial Planning Day,” where he offers individualized pro bono financial advice to residents in need.
A member of the Financial Planning Association, Howard earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Binghamton University, and later received his CFP® designation from the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado. |
